MINISTRY of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare legal advisor, Fredson Mabhena, has hailed the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UNDP for supporting the informal sector’s formalisation strategy.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Simon Masanga, at a validation workshop, Mabhena said the strategy will help the country increase its fiscal revenue base.
“The Government prioritised the development and implementation of a national action plan to address the most pervasive decent work deficits in the informal sector.
“This will promote the transition from informal to formal economy as a means of regularising employment and improve the country’s economy,” said Mabhena.
He acknowledged the informal sector’s input in the country’s economy and believes that the sector can do much better if formalised.
The formalisation strategy comes after the Ministry was mandated by Cabinet to formalise the sector.
“The strategy will lead to regularisation of employment, reduced decent work deficits, increased social protection coverage and economic growth as the country moves towards the attainment of an upper middle income under Vision 2030,” he said.
