THE Ministry of Mines and Mining Development strategic planning workshop for 2026 has opened at Clever’s Resort on the shores of Lake Mutirikwi today.
The planning workshop is expected to come up with interventions and strategies that will accelerate further growth in the mining sector.
Officially opening the workshop, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando underscored the importance of aligning the ministry’s strategies and programmes with the National Development Strategy (NDS 2) blueprint.
Minister Chitando noted that the workshop seeks to devise strategies to encourage more investment in the local mining sector while ensuring it is done in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner.
He added that his ministry wants operations in the mining sector to dovetail with NDS 2 while also speaking to President Mnangagwa’s ‘Leaving no one and no place behind’ mantra.
Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira said the mining sector has the potential to fuel Masvingo’s provincial gross domestic product growth.
He revealed that currently mining accounts for 8,9 percent of the provincial GDP. Minister Chadzamira urged the mining ministry to decentralise its services to all the districts in the province.
He revealed that Masvingo has the potential to be Zimbabwe’s mining hub, boasting minerals such as tungsten, gold, coal, lithium, manganese and diamonds, among other minerals.
