THE Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is hosting girls from various schools in Harare to commemorate Women’s Month.
The event was held under the theme Women in Transport: Driving the Future (Inspiring the next generation in STEM and Transport Careers).
In an interview, the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Engineer Joy Makumbe, said, “What I always tell women is that there has never been a time like now for women to shine because our Government at the moment is actually promoting women.
“Women who have got talent, women who really want to make a difference, women who want to be there when it happens.
“You will find that even when we do flight adverts for positions, we always encourage and state in black and white that women are encouraged to apply. So gone are the days when careers or positions were for men, you know.
“So it’s open. It is up to you. Do you have what it takes to deliver in that position? And it’s open for everyone to apply. So you find also with time what has been happening is that different ministries have also been doing career guidance.”
She added, “There have been days that have been set aside for career guidance
where different ministries showcase the different positions that they have so that our students out there get to know what is out there, the jobs that are there.
“You know, when we grew up, some of us, I went and did engineering, maybe just because my father was encouraging me, but there was no one else. So times should be different now where our students are empowered.”
She said there was need for girls to know which careers they would want to undertake in future.
“They should know the different careers out there and what subjects they need to do for them to be able to follow the careers of their dreams,” she said.
“So, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, every year, we celebrate women. So this year we decided to have a different theme, whereby you see,
“I am the student of the day, the head girl of the Ministry of Transport. So what we are actually saying is that with the different parastatals under the ministry, that is Civil Aviation, Authority of Zimbabwe, Airports Company of Zimbabwe,
“National Railways, Air Zimbabwe, Zinara, National Aviation Services, you know, all eight. They are all here, and they are going to take time to talk to our girls.”
