Secretary-General of the MDC faction led by Professor Welshman Ncube, Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, resigned last Thursday following a series of unresolved differences within the party executive. Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga, who is the Matabeleland South legislator(proportional representation), had served the Prof Ncube-led MDC for four years.
The faction’s deputy president Mr Edwin Mushoriwa said in a statement yesterday that the party regretted Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s resignation.
“It is with regret that we advise members of the party and the general public that on Thursday, February 12, 2015, Hon Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga tendered to the president of the party, Prof Welshman Ncube, her written resignation from position of secretary-general with immediate effect,” said Mr Mushoriwa.
“While the presidency welcomed her resignation, they indicated that they were not prepared to lose her parliamentary seat, which she held on behalf of the party.
“The presidency has accepted this resignation and hopes that Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga will continue in her other roles in which she was deployed by the party, such as her role in Parliament.”
Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga is a former member of the House of Assembly for Glen Norah. During her time as Glen Norah MP, she also served as the shadow foreign minister for the MDC. When the party split in 2005, she joined the Ncube-led MDC and was elected deputy secretary-general.
During the inclusive Government (2009-2013), she was the Minister of Regional Integration and International Co-operation.
She was then elected the party’s secretary-general at its congress in 2011.
