Miss Africa Zimbabwe contest outdoor affair

The Miss Africa Zimbabwe pageant will give Bulawayo a rare taste of outdoor modelling when it holds its first pageant in the City of Kings next week.

Some of the countryas beauties will strut their stuff in full view of city residents during the pageant which will be held on 29 April along 10th Avenue, between Fife and Jason Moyo Streets. Miss Africa is the brainchild of Bruce Nkgakile and former Miss Botswana-cum-model-scout Boingotlo Motlalekgosi.

In Zimbabwe the pageant is held under the auspices of Fingers Modelling Academy.

In an interview Miss Africa Zim spokesperson Talent Mpofu said they had opted for an outdoor venue as it was in line with the pageantas overall theme.

a?This is a pageant about upholding African values and for that reason we wanted to avoid fancy hotels completely. What better way to celebrate Africa and its beauty than holding a pageant under a clear African sky,a? he said.

Mpofu said although holding a pageant on a busy street in the City of Kings was a novelty, they were confident that all would go smoothly. He added that although there were many counter-attractions during the ZITF weekend when the pageant would be held, the organisers had intentionally pencilled the contest for the busy weekend.

a?The whole idea is to host the people of Zimbabwe and Africa and with the trade fair on the horizon we thought it was best to host the pageant at that one time everyone congregates in Bulawayo,a? he said.

Entertainment on the day will be provided by hip hop sensation Cal_Vin, Afro Soul artiste Thandy Dhlana, vivacious dancer and singer Sandra Ndebele, neo soul artiste Prayersoul, Afro Jazz musician Khuliyo, Drums of Peace and poet Sithandazile Dube. Comedian Babongile Sikhonjwa will be the MC.

The last time Fingers Modelling Agency had an open air show was the Miss Bulawayo 2006 pageant.
