IT is a prescribed responsibility for Miss Earth Zimbabwe to undertake environmental projects such as water conservation, reforestation, saving endangered wildlife, growing sustainable agricultural practice, encouraging the need and benefits of green energy and efforts that fall within the diverse range of climate change initiatives.
Embracing the pathos of “Beauties Nurturing Nature,” the foundation is committed to supporting the environment and creating a cherished legacy for natural beauty.
Boasting 15 selected potential “Eco-glam” beautiful queens who have a passion for fashion and people, finalists for the pageant have set out their projects with Bulawayo-based Nokwazi Mpofu, who is a part-time model at AM Model Management took Sunday Leisure through some of the projects she has done and is planning to do.
The 22-year-old fourth-year Quantity Surveying student at the National University of Science and Technology said she was working on a couple of projects with the aim of promoting public awareness on environmental issues.
“I am currently working on a series of projects to promote consciousness of the challenges that our environment faces locally and I endeavour to demonstrate through practical actions how people can curb these challenges.
My projects involve tree planting at schools, voluntary work at farms and addressing school pupils among other assignments that I endeavour to take,” she said.
Last week, Nokwazi and a few friends from Kensington and Sommer West Seventh Day Adventist Church volunteered to clean stables, feed and water horses at the Johnson Horse Ranch along Old Gwanda Road.
Born in Bulawayo, Mpofu said she entered this particular pageant because of her strong passion for environmental work.
“I have a passion for this kind of work and hence I entered this particular pageant and I also dream of representing Zimbabwe on an international platform and address issues that matter — like issues that affect our environment. The earth is arguably the only planet that supports life and so for this we should credit her by being good, responsible citizens who adopt clean sustainable living habits.
In addition, I am a very strong believer (Adventist) and I feel that any good steward of the Lord nurtures the environment in which God has given him or her charge over,” noted Mpofu.
