MISS Environment Zimbabwe is back after a two year absence with Green 4 Lyf Consultancy hosting the national finals on October 31 in Bulawayo. An official re-launch of the pageant will be held at the Garden Restaurant on Saturday with the venues for the event expected to be released there.

The pageant’s founder Briaton Takundwa said models would be drawn from all provinces with the pageant being hosted under the theme: “Environment conservation through ICT”.

Twenty models have so far been registered with organisers scouting for more. “We have done a recast of all models and so far we have 20. We want to have at most 25 models, with each province contributing at least two,” he said.

Takundwa said most of the outfits which would be worn for the various categories at the pageant would be made by the models from recycled material.

“The whole objective for this beauty pageant is to go green. The girls will be tasked to come up with outfits that they make from bits of plastic, wire, etc to show how creative they are and how they can recycle goods,” he said.

Takundwa added that the girl who would be crowned queen would be the national and international ambassador for Miss Environment.

“Instead of her entering many pageants, she will have to do some work nationally and internationally with regards to the environment. She will become the spokesperson for the environment agenda wherever she goes,” he said.

Takundwa said prizes for the queen and her two princesses would be revealed soon.

Asked why the pageant had not been held for the past two years, Takundwa said they were focusing on other projects in line with their environmental mandate.

“During the two years that we were not hosting the pageant, we were planting trees, cleaning streets and donating to the less privileged,” he said.

In 2012, Tshwane University student Nkanyeziyethu Malunga won the inaugural competition at a colourful ceremony held at Horizon Pub and Grill.

The then 23-year-old beauty queen was flanked by Marybeth Ushe – crowned first princess and Thubelihle Ncube who was crowned second princess.
