won a fiery contest of beauty queens in Midlands last October, said: “Charity begins at home, I live close to this place in Mkoba. The visit is to fulfill part of my pledge to be socially responsible through community service.
“I am touched and moved when I see people being neglected in our society, due to different beliefs in our various cultures.”
Anita said the visit was also in preparation for the grand finale of the country’s beauty queens, the Miss Zimbabwe pageant, where she will battle it out with other queens coming from all the corners of the country.
“These people don’t only need food and gifts of people whom they do not see, but also they want fellowship and social contact, because they are created in the image of God just like us. We should totally adopt the Christian mandate to love one another as the bible says,” said Anita.
In her recommendation to the Government and society at large she said: “Our Government should try giving first preference to schools like these. We are all aware that things are not yet rosy in our country due to economic hardships, but when opportunity comes let’s spare a little for them. To our people I urge them to occasionally visit these places, especially church members.”
Anita said she feels her journey has just begun and she is working tirelessly to make sure she lands the crown and fly the country’s flag high.
Speaking at the same occasion, outgoing Miss Gweru, Eluta Kundiona (24) highlighted the need to improve the education standards at schools for the disadvantaged.
She said; “I urge our responsible ministries and donors to give these schools the best educational materials such as textbooks. They also need computers and television sets to help them learn fast, toys such as balls to entertain them are also needed. I urge all the people of Zimbabwe to give special attention to the elderly and disadvantaged.”
The headmistress at the school, Susan Ncube, greatly appreciated the visit by the beauty queens saying: “I greatly appreciate the visit by our beauty queens. They are the second lot to visit in four years. This really shows that they are concerned about their country and its people regardless of status.
“During the visit they hugged and played with the children, cooked food for them, taught them how to use cellphones, which is very important to the lives of these children.”
Anita is a student at Gweru Polytechnical College and is studying towards a diploma in banking and finance.
Eluta is pursuing a diploma in accounting at Commercial Study Centre.
