THE modelling season is upon us and pageants are will be raining down in all corners of the country, so to speak.
With this in mind, preparations for this year’s edition of Miss Universities are at an advanced staged with October 12 set as the day for the grand finale at Harare’s Ochi City.
So far, 15 models have been identified from universities around the country with 15 more expected.
One of the organisers, Spiwe Nkala, shed light on the developments.
“So far we have assembled models from university pageants. The University of Zimbabwe, Bindura University, National University of Science and Technology have had their pageants while Midlands State University, Lupane, Gwanda, Great Zimbabwe are yet to hold theirs. The winners will join other finalists to bring them up to 30,” she said.
As is the norm, the girls are expected to camp for a week at Ochi Safaris from October 4 where they will hold workshops with prominent people.They will also tour some of the resorts in the country.
“The Miss Universities brand continues to grow and has made positive strides in improving the quality of models since its inception in 2010. Top flight models Rumbidzai Mudzengerere and Lisa Morgan are some of the success stories that have had success on international platforms,” added organising secretary Katherine Sukutu.
She said it had been confirmed that the ultimate winner at the pageant was going to receive a motor vehicle, a laptop, scholarships and cash prizes.
“Miss Universities is different from other pageants in that we are promoting beauty with a purpose. Universities are the institutions with the cream of the society because an educated woman is t a better position to make important decisions,” she said.
She added that the queen of this year would be presented with a vehicle on the day that she is crowned that which she will keep for good.
She will again represent the country at Miss Universities Africa.
“Plans are underway to have her participate in the world pageant although these have not yet been finalised,” said Sukutu.
Harare Institute of Technology and Gwanda State universities are expected to join the fun this year. University students taking part are expected to be aged between 18 and 26.
Last year, a guest judge was brought in from Nigeria. The organisers, however, did not rule out a surprise judge on the day of the show.
