adminhe says now it’s the time to drop a bombshell. Born Chamunorwa Kwenda in the United States, the 36-year-old dapper rapper used to charm listeners with his simplicity and flow of lyrics like water downstream.
Back in the days when he was one of the video jockeys (VJs) on Channel O based in South Africa, Mizchif represented Zimbabwe to the fullest without leaving anything to the imagination.
However, his career took a dip around 2009 when South Africa was hit by a wave of xenophobic attacks and being Zimbabwean, he became an easy target.
“It was sad that xenophobia became institutionalised and at the time everything was going on for me. I was a VJ on Channel O while at the same time a co-host on YFM with Rude Boy Paul.
“Channel O deliberately failed to renew my contract and the same thing happened with radio, so eventually I was forced to pack my bags and head home,” he said.
This affected not only his music career but love life as well.
“I lost my job, I got divorced from my wife of many years and the pressure kept on piling on me. Each time I think about it I get stressed but I am happy that we are about to reconcile with my wife and son Jordan (12),” he said.
Mizchif was born in New York and his family then moved to South Africa where he eventually settled. He started rapping at the age of 17 with all the hip-hop hype influencing his music, he sounded like a rapper who emerged straight out of Compton or Brooklyn in the US.
“I don’t sing urban grooves, my music is pure hip-hop and it’s something that comes naturally without me exerting myself” he said.
Mizchif says the forthcoming album, which features a number of collaborations with Zimbabwean artistes, would be his fifth studio product.
Mizchif shot to fame when he released the track “Wonderful World” which did well on the airwaves. The jazz track sampled Louis Armstrong’s hit “What a Wonderful World”.
He was also part of the Channel O VJs tour organised by Yakusa that came to Harare alongside KB, Nonhle Thema and Miss Candy. He was featured on “I Am Zimbabwean” compilation CD recorded to promote the Miss Zimbabwe 2012 pageant.
