The 56-hole tournament begins this morning and a total of US$25 000 is on offer.
Last year the in-form Mketekete carded rounds of 70, 73 and a cool 68 to walk away as the champion in a star-studded field.
Warming up at his home course, Chapman, yesterday, the Zvishavane-born golfer said he is looking forward to the event and hope that he will play well.
“I have prepared well for the event and I hope I can do well. The course is in good condition and I think the game will be competitive as usual.
“It is every player’s wish to successfully defend his title and I will go into the game hoping to do the same. My practise has been going on well and I have since adjusted to make up on areas I thought need improvement. My chipping is good now and I believe that will help me in approaching the greens with caution. The field will be competitive but my last outing was not that bad and I hope to improve from there. This year everyone is capable of winning any event and it has been long since I won so I look forward to the game,” Mketekete said.
Mketekete was tied on second place in the last tournament — the Hwange Open — with Nyasha Muyambo.
The second edition of the Golden Pilsener Harare Open is unlikely to see Mtekete dominating like what he did last season as several other golfers have improved immensely.
Player of the moment Brian Gondo has become the man to beat in most encounters, having won the Lowveld pro-am and Hwange Open.
Gondo’s terrific form has seen him settling on second position in the Zambezi Tour order of merit.
Attention will not be on Gondo alone as Greg Bentley, Ryan Cairns and Micky Hough are also in with a chance of winning this event.
Robson Saurombe, who is keeping a low profile this season, may make his presence felt after emerging as a runner-up in the inaugural event last year.
Saurombe of Chapman will be complemented by the Muyambos, Day and Nyasha, Tich Musemburi, Munashe Madhodha, Roy da Costa, Tongo Charamba, Shane Pringle, Jack Rogers, Phillip Tshuma and Peter Banda among several others. The Golden Pilsener Harare Open will be competitive as the season is slowly coming to an end and every player would want to finish in the Top 10 that will have an automatic ticket in next year’s Zimbabwe Open. It remains to be seen who will dethrone Mketekete when the event begins today. The Golden Pilsener Harare Open will also give the amateurs a chance to compete and the Top 10 in the Zimbabwe Golf Association order of merit are given the privilege to play alongside the professionals.
