Norton legislator, Temba Peter Mliswa, accused of violating the Covid-19 national lockdown regulations after convening a Press conference at his Borrowdale home, indicated that he will challenge his placement on remand on the day he returns to court next month.
Mliswa was remanded on $20 000 bail to March 4 on charges of contravening national lockdown regulations.
“We will be challenging the accused’s placement on remand on the next remand date,” said lawyer Mr Musindo Hungwe.
Granting the $20 000 bail, Harare Provincial Magistrate Mrs Vongai Guwuriro barred Mliswa from convening any other Press conferences pending his trial.
Mr Charles Muchemwa and Mrs Constance Ngombengombe, appearing for the State, alleged that on Thursday morning, Mliswa called a Press conference at his house with 22 journalists attending. Police Assistant Inspector Damba, as a result of a tip-off, visited Mliswa’s house in the company of a team from the Support Unit and allegedly found Mliswa about to take questions from the journalists.
Police are said to have observed that there was no social distancing amongst journalists and advised Mliswa that he was violating Covid-19 regulations and arrested him.
