Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to speed up the construction of schools following the recent release of $20 million by the government.

He said this would ensure children, particularly those in communal and new resettlement areas are within walking distance to the nearest school.

VP Mnangagwa was speaking during a briefing at Kwekwe City Council recently before he commissioned computers donated to Dambudzo Primary School in the gold mining town.

“I’m aware that the government has availed $20 million to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for the construction of new schools across the country.

“We hope that the entire province will benefit equally from this programme,” he said.

At least 100 schools are expected to be constructed before the end of the year. Most of the schools will be built in resettlement areas.

VP Mnangagwa said the construction of schools was a partial fulfilment of President Mugabe’s vision to build an educated nation.

Cabinet approved the curriculum blueprint crafted by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education following a review process that began in October last year.

The ultimate goal is to produce graduates who are self reliant, useful and ready to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of the country.

The new curriculum, code named Zimbabwe Education Blueprint and set to be introduced next year, will scrap Integrated Science from the curriculum and replace it with General Science, among many other changes.

If adopted, the new education blueprint would be implemented starting next year.
