Mob burns homestead as missing man hunt turns deadly in Nkayi

A MAN who had reportedly returned to Zimbabwe after fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa has been killed, while the mother of his missing partner is battling for her life in hospital after a violent mob attack that culminated in the burning of a homestead in Gampinya Village, Nkayi.

Investigations have revealed that the violence is linked to a long-running dispute surrounding two men who were allegedly involved in a same-sex relationship in the village several years ago.

Sources said the relationship became known within the community, triggering hostility and threats against the pair. Fearing for their safety, the two men reportedly fled separately, with one disappearing into hiding while the other, identified as Thabiso Job, crossed into neighbouring South Africa.

However, Job’s stay in South Africa was short-lived as he allegedly became a victim of xenophobic attacks and was forced to return to Zimbabwe.

Upon his return, Job reportedly sought refuge at the homestead of his missing partner’s mother, believing he would be safe there.

According to villagers, rumours soon spread that Job had returned and that his missing partner might also be hiding at the homestead.

The rumours allegedly sparked outrage within the community, leading to a violent attack on the property.

An angry mob is said to have descended on the homestead, severely assaulting Job and his partner’s mother before setting the property on fire.

Job reportedly died as a result of injuries sustained during the attack.

His partner’s mother suffered severe burns and other injuries and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, where she remains admitted.

Residents described scenes of chaos as the attack unfolded.

“We saw people gathering and shouting before the situation spiralled out of control. Before long, the house was on fire,” said a villager who requested anonymity.

Another resident said the incident had left many people shocked.

“It is heartbreaking. A life has been lost, a mother is fighting for her life and a family home has been destroyed. Regardless of people’s views, this should never have happened,” said the resident.

Sources said some members of the community remain convinced that the missing man may have secretly returned to the area, despite there being no evidence to support the claims.

As a result, fears persist that further violence could occur should he be located.

The whereabouts of the surviving partner remain unknown.

Community leaders have condemned the attack and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

They warned that violence and vigilantism only deepen divisions and cause further suffering within communities.
