The pageant, which is being held for the first time, will see three lucky winners from 20 models from around Zimbabwe crowned Miss Global International Zimbabwe, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.
The winner will go to the Miss Global pageant to be held at Montego Bay Convention Centre, Jamaica, on 22 September while the first runner-up will go to Miss Heritage to be held in Sandton, South Africa, on 13 October this year.
Bulawayo, the home of beauty queens, will be represented by 22- year-old Nokuthula Moyo and Miss Bulawayo 2011 finalist Mellissa Chaka.
Speaking to Saturday Leisure, Moyo said she was optimistic she would make it tops in the pageant.
“As is the history with Bulawayo models, I am confident I will make it and represent the country at the world finals in Jamaica,” she said.
Moyo, a Media and Communications student with the Zimbabwe Open University, said her dream as a model was to deal with issues of women abuse and empowerment.
“My dream is to make a difference in women and children’s lives, tackle issues of child abuse, abuse of women, and to engage in projects that will help the victims acquire a better education, live healthy lives and have enough food on their table,” said Moyo.
The Miss Global International pageant is a Jamaican pageant aimed at mainly promoting tourism and women’s empowerment.
The red carpet event, running under the theme “Investing in Zimbabwean Tourism Locally and Internationally”, will be held at the Rainbow Towers next Saturday.
“The red carpet event will be hosted under the theme ‘Investing in Zimbabwean Tourism Locally and Internationally’ and we are hoping to pull a crowd of at least 600 high-end guests,” said Miss Global International Zimbabwe public relations officer Tare Munzara.
He said the pageant was aimed at promoting nationalism, the local modelling industry, the standards of beauty pageants, the local fashion industry, direct foreign investment and trade and also crowning a beautiful, intelligent and world-class model to represent the country.
Munzara said winners would execute the objectives of the pageant stage by stage with the help of relevant local authorities.
During their tenure, they would attend grooming classes and undertake a diplomatic course to sharpen their ambassadorial skills.
“What is unique about this pageant is that our models are all new faces in the local modelling industry and well-groomed with international standards.
It is a well-structured international tourism brand filled with glitz and glamour,” he said.
Zimbabwe’s participation at the international event dates back from 2006 where the first-ever Miss Global International winner was Zimbabwean model Ropafadzo Garise with Miss Zimbabwe 2007 Cynthia Muvirimi finishing as the first runner up.
The pageant was not open to former Miss Zimbabwe Trust contestants at provincial or national level.
Munzara said the other prerequisites for models were a beautiful face, good skin tone and good body structure.
Models would battle it out in two categories — designer and evening wear.
Contestants stand a high chance of winning by the number of votes they get and through people liking their Facebook pages.
