THE Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Raj Modi, has reiterated his commitment to the eradication of drug and substance abuse.
Modi said he will continue to support Government efforts to curb all social ills including drug and substance abuse.
It is a scourge threatening today’s youth who are the future leaders of the country. Even the adult population is addicted, something that is even affecting the everyday lives and livelihoods of families.
Modi, who is the legislator for Bulawayo South, organised a cycling awareness programme that began in Bulawayo and ended in Chitungwiza last week.
It was a success as 18 cyclists, among them former national champion Nkulumo Dube, partook in the race in which motorists and communities along the route and at centres were engaged.
The Deputy Minister was among the participants in an activity.
Modi believes cycling is a powerful tool in creating awareness and the fight to eradicate it from society hence his decision to take the campaign from Bulawayo, through Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, the Midlands, Mashonaland West and Harare Province.
“It was a remarkable display of solidarity and determination, cyclists from across Bulawayo embarked on a four-day journey to raise awareness on drug and substance abuse while demonstrating unwavering support for individuals on the path to recovery. The cycling event, which commenced in Bulawayo and culminated in Chitungwiza, served as a powerful platform to advocate for change and inspire those battling addiction,” said Deputy Minister Modi.
Modi said he was happy to see the youths coming forward and asking for help in fighting the scourge that has wreaked havoc in all the provinces.
The cycling got underway on May 7, as cyclists left Bulawayo and Modi praised them for their resilience which he said was important in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
Each city and town along the route hosted the cycling party on arrival and departure allowing the participants time to engage communities and share the evil effects of the scourge.
Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, graced the ceremonies, re-affirming the Second Republic’s firm stance against drug and substance abuse.
Several corporates like ProBottlers, Ingwebu, Activ8, and Saimart contributed to the campaign.
“I am happy there was a spirit of unity and resilience prevailing, inspiring hope and igniting a sense of purpose in the fight against drug and substance abuse. The event culminated with a powerful message of solidarity and a call to action to address the pervasive issue affecting Zimbabwean society,” said Modi.
Together, he said, a brighter future and a healthier, drug-free Zimbabwe lies ahead.
