AFRO fusion outfit, Mokoomba, can’t wait to be at the prestigious WOMAD Festival in August.
During the build up to the event, the Victoria Falls-based group will promote their forth-coming album named Tusona.
“This week we are performing live in Harare at Reps Theatre before we travel to Europe on June 22nd till August 5, the highlight of which will be our performance at WOMAD in the UK among other concerts,” said Abundance Mutori, the group spokesperson.
Unpacking the new album, Mutori said:
“The album has 13 tracks and the music speaks to a number of social issues and some traditional stories.”
The group outlined their vision and what drives them to H-Metro.
“We are proud that we have been able to remain together as a group for many years and we have been able to make music that has taken us to more than 40 countries around the world.
“In our more than 12 years on stage, we have won a number of awards and critical acclaim and have become one of our country’s top cultural ambassadors.
“Our journey as a band from Chinotimba Township (Victoria Falls) is a good example to emerging bands who also want their music to go beyond our borders.
“Our music is inspired by traditional rhythms and story-telling fused with international influences.
“Our local traditions carry a lot of indigenous knowledge and wisdom which we want to help preserve and pass down from our generation to the next through music.”
Mutori said they believe in the power of collaborations.
“We have collaborated with other artists live on stage before but on this new album project, we featured other artists for the first time namely DeSOLO B, from Democratic Republic of Congo but based in Zimbabwe, on the song titled ‘Makolo’ which talks about the importance of providing our young children with quality education for a better future.
“We also featured Ulethu, who is an amazing local female vocalist on the song titled ‘Manina’ which talks about the loss and devastation we experienced at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
He saluted their fans for their support.
“We have a close relationship with our fans and supporters of our music and our careers.
“Our audience is spread out in many different countries and we use our social media and live concerts to keep engaged and connected to them.”
