After its successful run at Harare’s Theatre in the Park, Peter Churu’s one-woman play – ‘Molly Street’ – will be taken on a national and regional tour.
Harare’s theatre lovers have been given another chance to watch the play at Reps Theatre in Belgravia from October 22 – 26.
Popular arts hub Alliance Francaise in Harare will also host the play next month before its taken to South Africa.
Directed by Churu, actress Chido Joan Tenga stars as Molly in the play, which depicts crimes of passion and domestic violence.
Patrick Tembo provided the soundtrack.
In an interview with The Herald Arts, Churu’s team could not hide their elation as theatre gurus have endorsed the play as a masterpiece.
“We are happy with the feedback that our play has garnered because it will now go on national and regional tours.
“The play will run from October 22 to 26 at Reps Theatre Upstairs in Harare.
“Afterwards, fans in South Africa will have a chance to watch it from November 16 – 18 at Market Theatre for Kaza Kambi Pan African Theatre Festival (Johannesburg).
“It is the first Zimbabwean play to perform at Market Theatre,” he said.
After the South African tour, locals should also brace for Molly Street at Alliance Francaise in Harare.
“From November 21 – 23, ‘Molly Street’ will be showing at Alliance Francaise, Harare.
“Jason Mphepo Little Theatre will also host it from December 2-7. From January 21-25 next year, it will be shown at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton, Joburg.
“We are still exploring and accepting further bookings.”
The one-hander, which ran from September 18-22 at Theatre in the Pak, brilliantly tackles social ills involving sexual assault, murder and poverty.
The play was set in the late 1950s on the sugarcane plantation of Chiredzi.
In the case of “Molly Street”, Tenga, who played multiple roles, nailed it in the one-hander.
Besides her beauty and brains, Molly was killed by her lover in yet another crime of passion.
In the play, Molly’s avenging spirit has been the talk of Chiredzi for close to 70 years.
