EXPERIENCED music producer, Clive “Mono” Mukundu, has urged artists to be original and show their identity.
The veteran multi-instrumentalist shot down the “I am a versatile artist” tag, saying it remains a stumbling block to many artists.
Speaking during the second VIP launch of Breeze Music Group’s album, Mono, who boasts of more than 35 years in showbiz, believes artists should stick to their areas of speciality.
“There is this trending statement that ‘I am a versatile artist’ ndinoita zvese.
“Let me tell you, there is nothing like that. There is queen of soul, king of reggae, king of Chimurenga, hakuna king of everything, you need an identity, find yourself. Be known for your area of specialty,” he said.
Mono also called for financial support for musicians to sustain themselves.
“The music industry is based on business principles and by that, we mean there is a need for funding.
“Let’s support Breeze Music with funding, not only by clapping our hands. Ma musicians hadye mhururu nemheterwa.
“We need to support local musicians, hatidye mhururu. Worldwide, major labels put funding in music. You hear music being played everywhere, its due to funding.
“Being a musician is not easy, because at times the happiness we give fans is not in our lives.”
He is also urged musicians to be original.
“I now have more than 35 years in the industry and for someone to be successful in this industry, it’s a struggle.
“I hope you are sounding Zimbabwean, otherwise mofa muri ma upcoming artists.
“Several musicians don’t want to sound Zimbabwean and you will die mungori upcoming. Be original and sing in your own language.
“Don’t imitate other languages.
“Let’s not also forget the boy child as we support the girl child. We are in an era of supporting the girl child, but don’t forget to include boy child as well.”
