THE erection of a monument dedicated to former Mozambican President, Samora Machel, at the Liberation City in Harare, will strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
The Liberation City, located along Samora Machel Avenue West next to Westlea, already hosts the Museum of African Liberation, which has the story of the African liberation struggle.
The monument is set to be erected on one acre of land.
Fifteen other countries have been invited to erect their own monuments.
Addressing the media on the rollout of the Mozambique liberation monument, the Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK) chief executive officer, Kwame Muzawazi, said preparations for the erection of the monument were underway.
“This is a project undertaken and fully funded and implemented by the Government of Mozambique on Zimbabwe’s soil,” said Muzawazi.
He said the monument would be erected along a symbolic highway, Samora Machel Avenue, and would be the second monument along the street, after the Mbuya Nehanda statue.
“Zimbabwe continues to take action on the permanent protection, promotion and preservation of our history and memory.
“We are honoured to be the host of this historic institution to ensure that the memory of the sacrifices and achievements of our countries will never be forgotten.
“It is an honour to have 55 African flags flying high in Zimbabwe telling the story of Africa,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, the Mozambique Institute for Research on the History of the Struggle for National Liberation director, Bernado Nakatembo, said this was an opportunity to share the two countries’ liberation war stories
“We are only following up on what has been done to foster relations between the two countries.
“We are currently in the country to make sure that the project becomes a reality.
“We are ready to start the project as part of integration and fostering relations,” he said.
