MOUNTAINEERS and Ireland wicketkeeper, Peter Moor, donated cricket kit for the development of grassroots cricket academies under the Manicaland Cricket Association at Mutare Boys’ High School last week on Saturday.
The donation include players’ gloves, English willow bats, stumps and protective gear for players and coaches to cater for the cricket academies at Chirovakamwe, Sakubva, Chikanga and rural areas.
Manicaland Cricket Association’s development manager, Square Square expressed gratitude to the gesture by the Mountaineers wicketkeeper.
He said: “It is good to see our senior cricket team members donating equipment for junior players’ development in the community.
“PJ Moor wants to promote Under-14 and Under-17 players so that they can play regularly and compete in national tournaments against other teams.
“We are also happy that local cricket coaches received cricket gloves and kits to use during practise sessions. This will make their work easy.
“There is a lot of progress in both clubs as some of the excelling cricketers will receive scholarships to enrol at Hillcrest College and St John’s High School among other A schools in the country,” said Square.
Provincial cricket has been growing as young athletes have been making their mark on the international scene.
Lady Chevrons bowler, Kudzai Chigora was awarded her first debut against a fierce Ireland squad last month at Harare Sports Club after a string of impressive performances during the warm-up games.
The 17-year-old bowler and Nyamauru High School learner has been growing from strength to strength since her return from a coaching clinic in India.
