More cheers for drinkers

Business Reporter
AFRICAN Distillers Limited has slashed prices for its cider brands, Savanna and Hunters, by between 22 and 25 percent following the commissioning of its US$5 million packaging plant on Wednesday. The reduction in prices is due to a drop in costs that were being incurred to import ciders from South Africa. At most beer and retail outlets, the premium alcoholic beverages are selling at US$2 per bottle and the price cut will result in prices falling to US$1,50. Afdis managing director Mr Cecil Gombera confirmed that the investment has brought down costs associated with importing the cider brands.

However, with the profiteering behaviour among local retailers, the price reduction might not be passed on to consumers as those in the business of selling alcohol might take advantage of the reduction to maximise profits.

The reduction in the prices of Afdis’ cider brands comes shortly after Delta Beverages announced a cut on the retail price of its lager beers in a move meant to stir demand to drive volumes.

With effect from September 15 this year, the beverage maker reduced beer prices on some its lager products, saying the move was meant to make beer more affordable in the face of slowing demand. The recommended retail price for a pint of lager was set at US$0,95.

The price of a 750ml quart was reduced from US$1,75 to US$1,60 while the price of Eagle Lager was reduced from US$1,20 to US$1. The price of 660ml magnum bottle of Golden Pilsener, Zambezi Lager and Bohlingers lager was reduced from US$1,80 to US$1,75.
