SOME of the illicit brews, which are part of a cocktail of alcoholic drinks which have been banned by the Government, include Challenge, Kitoko and Ranger.
The Government officially gazetted Statutory Instrument (S.I.) No. 62 of 2025 under the Harmful Liquids Act, effectively banning the production, distribution, and consumption of dangerous and unregulated alcoholic concoctions.
Some Asian businessmen are believed to be the masterminds in this industry.
Popular brands include Tumbwa and Musombodhiya.
Added to this list are Challenger, Kitoko and Ranger which are understood to be supplied by a company operating along Manchester Road in the capital.
Their illicit brew comes in 200ml, 500ml and 750ml packs.
Next on the list are Kabisa and Magic Moments, two illicit brews allegedly supplied by a company along Coventry Road.
There is also Happy Cheers, Stallion and Tambirani, which come in 200ml and 750ml packages.
The ban, announced by the Minister of Home Affairs, Kazembe Kazembe, underscores the Government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and promoting community well-being.
For years, illicit brews have posed significant risks to public health.
These unregulated concoctions, often produced under unsanitary conditions, contain harmful substances that lead to severe health complications, including poisoning, addiction, and, in extreme cases, fatalities.
The Government has decided not to stand idly by as dangerous practices threaten the health and safety of our citizens.
Stakeholders believe this ban is a vital step toward building a safer, healthier nation.
The Statutory Instrument Provisions of S.I. No. 62 of 2025 strictly prohibits the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit brew with violators facing severe penalties under the law.
Law enforcement agencies have been empowered to ensure adherence to this regulation, supported by community leaders and stakeholders.
