THE director for tertiary programmes in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Darlington Damba, has praised Harare Polytechnic for producing innovative students.

The students have positively impacted Zimbabwe’s socio-economy.

He acknowledged the hard work of the institution’s lecturers, who have honed students’ skills, and stated that technical colleges like Harare Poly were crucial to the country’s development objectives.

During World Refrigeration Day commemorations, Damba hailed alumnus Cain Manyukwa, who donated equipment for the college’s refrigeration workshop.

Manyukwa is chairperson of the Heating, Energy, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Association, as well as president of the SADC Refrigeration Air Conditioning Association.

Manyukwa’s environmentally friendly machines will expose students “to an environment with advanced technology (to) serve as a catalyst to innovative thinking that will lead to industrialisation and modernisation in Zimbabwe”.

Damba said in Manyukwa, the college had mastered the new education system that is required for development.

“You have become a living testimony to demonstrate that our Tvetised heritage and indigenous knowledge systems under Education 5.0 model can produce skilled personnel that are not only employees, but also employers that create job opportunities.

“Our education system must produce goods and services for our people as we gravitate towards attaining an upper middle-income status by 2030,” he said.

He thanked Manyukwa for donating equipment to the college’s refrigeration workshop.

“Exposure of students to an environment with advanced technology will serve as a catalyst to innovative thinking that will lead to industrialisation and modernisation in Zimbabwe.

“The country relies on you, our graduates, to be solution providers to socio-economic challenges that include poverty, inequality, technological disruptions and the ravages of climate change,” he said.
