The private sector continues to join national efforts to create a clean environment with calls for Zimbabweans to take the National Environment Cleaning Day as a motivator to sustained daily cleanliness.
President Mnangagwa last December declared the first Friday of each month, the National Environment Cleaning Day, in an effort to ensure the country has a sustainable environment management and waste disposal system.
The national environmental cleaning is conducted between 8 and 10 am.
Since its inception, both private and public sector players have continued to heed the call by President Mnangagwa to clean their environs. Speaking at a clean-up, which also drew participation from Zimbabwe Fertiliser Company Ltd, Delta Chibuku, Halsted and Drip Tech Irrigation in Workington Industrial Area, ZIMOCO finance executive Ms Isabel Hayter said cleanliness began at individual level.
“This is an important event. We must realise that we are all citizens of this country and at the end of the day if we don’t take this initiative seriously, we cannot blame anyone,” she said.
“We cannot blame politics, we cannot blame Harare City Council, but we should blame ourselves for polluting the environment.
“This clean up should not just end on the prescribed day, but should be sustained daily.
“As businesses in this (Workington Industrial) area, we took it upon ourselves to say the area we operate in is now an eyesore and it is up to us to clean the environment.”
Ms Hayter raised displeasure at some business outlets operating at Coventry Road Shops, especially liquor outlets that were failing to manage litter and empty bottles.
She said there was need for the businesses to establish proper waste disposal systems.
