More register for meals at soup kitchen

There has been a surge in the number of people registering for free meals at a soup kitchen in Chitungwiza, with 3 500 people per day receiving food in the last month.

The kitchen is being run by an immigration lawyer Ms Samantha Muzoroki at her home in Unit A Chitungwiza, with donations from well-wishers, churches, and the business community.

The kitchen follows the Covid-19 regulations, with social distancing and sanitisation a must for everyone. All the staff who prepare and serve the meals have been screened for Covid-19.

The kitchen is keeping lists of those who have been accepted to prevent cheats who do not need special help jumping in and pushing out those who do and for statistical purposes while new entries are added the moment they start receiving meals.

Since the kitchen is operating from a home, beneficiaries bring food containers, collect their food and eat at their homes and this has seen some families from the vicinity wholly relying on the kitchen in recent months.

During breakfast, the kids receive porridge while supper consists of sadza with soya chunks, sugar beans or cabbages.

The kitchen has now been registered as a Trust and will assume the title once it moves to a new bigger space it has been offered by Chitungwiza Municipality.

The only outstanding issue is medical certification before it move to the new premises.

Ms Muzoroki yesterday said the kitchen had been facing shortages, as numbers of people collecting food continued to grow day.

She said as part of efforts to supplement donations, the kitchen embarked on a poultry project.
