THE organisers of the Mining Media Awards have promised more rewards for the 12th edition of the journalistic awards to be held on November 21 in Harare.Journalists will have to submit entries from September 16 to October 17 to be considered for the awards.Organised by Minex, the awards will be held under theme: ‘Stories of Growth and Sustainability” to underline the importance of storytelling in the growth of the economy, anchored by mining.
Minex chairman Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwere said development and growth are narratives that beg serious telling. He said they received representation from journalist to add more value to the awards.

“This year, we’re making a commitment to do better than we’ve done in the previous years to reward the story tellers. But this is a conversation we need to have with those who support the mining media,” said Mr Hwengwere.
“Just as well, we have entered into partnerships with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, the Association of Mining Journalists of Zimbabwe, so that we build this ecosystem together.
“But the real issue is that the Mining Media Awards were created in order to recognise the storyteller who is the centre of growth in mining, as well as address issues of sustainability, and to link that with communities,” he added.
Mr Hwengwere said journalists play a critical role in all matters of development and growth, adding that utilization of mining resources must never be detached from the people in the communities.

He also said mining must always be done in a safe way that also protects the environment.“That means the storytellers are the ones that link resources to investors and to communities.
The Mining Media Awards were created to tell the mining story in ways that say mining is good for your tomorrow,” said Mr Hwengwere.“So, mining growth is good, but mining also must be done in ways that ensure communities and the environment don’t suffer. That’s essentially that and the centre of that story is the media practitioner. It is the journalist,” he said.
