MOROCCO will be trying to resurrect their faint World Cup dreams when they host Gambia at the Stade de Marrakech tonight.
Morocco need to win their remaining two qualifiers and hope that leaders Cote d’Ivoire fail to pick up a point in their remaining two games in order for the North Africans to win the group and qualify for the last qualifying phase from the Caf Zone World Cup qualifiers.
Gambia who are out of the running for a World Cup berth are currently languishing at the bottom of Group C. They only accumulated one point thus far and are nine points adrift of leaders Cote d’Ivoire.
With the Scorpions already out of contention following a 3-0 defeat by the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in Banjul last weekend, the Atlas Lions put their campaign back on track following a 2-1 win over second-placed Tanzania last Saturday.
The win put the Lions on five points, one adrift of Tanzania while the Elephants top the section with 10 points from four matches. Victory over the Taifa Stars for Cote d’Ivoire this weekend will guarantee top spot in Group C and a place in the final phase of the qualifiers. The first meeting between Gambia and Morocco ended in a 1-1 stalemate in Banjul in the opening game of the qualifiers.
Today’s game might be an opportunity for coach Peter Bonu Johnson to secure his first win as a senior national team coach. It will be the first time that he will lead the Scorpions out on foreign soil. Gambia’s forward Momodou Ceesay is not part of the Gambian squad that has headed for Morocco for the World Cup qualifying rounds set for the weekend.
Ceesay was part of the Scorpions team that lost to Cote d’Ivoire 3-1 last weekend.
Meanwhile, Tanzania will host African football giants Cote d’Ivoire at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam tomorrow afternoon in their 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier.
Cote d’Ivoire, who are currently topping Group C with two games remaining, are a four points clear of weekend opponents Tanzania.-Supersport.
