Harare City Council yesterday said it had completed refurbishment of two water pumps at the Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant and the pumps are expected to be fully functional beginning this Wednesday.The rehabilitation of the plant is expected to increase the volume of water with an additional 86 million mega- litres a day.
This means the city’s prolonged water woes may be finally coming to an end with most of perennially dry parts of city expected to get treated water.
Speaking at the opening of the project on Friday, Harare Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said only two of the pumps will be fully operational with the other one being a back up.
He said the pumps would ease water problems in the northern and western suburbs such as Epworth, Mufakose, Budiriro, Glen Norah and Borrowdale, Greendale and Highlands.
“The commissioning of these two water pumps will provide additional water to what we already have. About 86 million megalitres of water will be supplied per day, that means more water will now be harvested.
“Most of the areas in the high-density and low-density suburbs will get sufficient and fresher water. Places include Epworth, Mufakose, Budiriro, Glen Norah and Borrowdale, Greendale and Highlands.”
He said Harare residents were scrambling for a few available pumps which used to supply the northern suburbs only since the commissioned ones were not functional for some time.
