A 23-YEAR-OLD woman, who allegedly strangled her son soon after giving birth and threw away the corpse at a dump site in Harare, appeared in court yesterday.
Nancy Chitsiga appeared before magistrate Appolonia Marutya who remanded her in custody to today for bail considerations.
Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira alleged that on Friday, at around 5am, Chitsiga, who was nine months pregnant, woke up in labour.
She delivered the baby by herself and choked the child soon afterwards.
After killing the baby, she allegedly wrapped up the corpse and placed it in a plastic bag.
She placed the plastic bag beside the house bin.
She then went on to calmly do her house chores.
After some time, she decided to go and throw away the litter at a dump site across the road.
A friend accompanied her to the dumping pit not knowing that among the litter was a dead baby.
At around 1pm, a boy (12), who stays in the same camp, went to the pit to throw away some litter with his friend and saw the baby’s corpse.
Someone had lit up a fire at the pit which exposed the baby.
A police report was made and Chitsiga was arrested after a tip-off.
