A 29-YEAR-OLD woman and her 3-month-old daughter on Monday died while four others escaped with injuries after the car they were travelling in lost control and veered off the road in Mount Gandayi, about 9 km from Zimunya.

The names of the deceased are Shamiso Mabuto and Ropafadzo Mabuto.

Manicaland provincial police spokesman, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda urged drivers to exercise caution particularly this coming merry-making festive season.

“We established that the drivers were speeding. This is sad. Lives have been lost because of negligence. We urge drivers to avoid speeding and exercise caution. People should also avoid boarding towed cars, this is dangerous and we discourage that,” said Ass Insp Chananda.

At around 7:30 am, Tawanda Mabuto was driving a Peugeot 504 carrying five passengers heading through Gandayi road. He was towing another Peugeot 504 belonging to Tinashe Matowo (27) of Sakubva. Upon approaching a sharp curve near Gandayi growth point, Tawanda lost control and the vehicle they were travelling in overturned once and landed on its roof.

Shamiso and Ropafadzo who were in Tawanda’s car died on the spot. Passengers who were in the towed car escaped with minor injuries. The injured persons were ferried to Zimunya Clinic and later transferred to Mutare Provincial Hospital. Both vehicles later caught fire.
