A 10-month-old baby died recently after the mother slit its throat before turning the knife on herself in a botched suicide attempt.
Prisca Muchanyu (33) survived but her daughter Chipochashe died of excessive bleeding. It is suspected that the mother visited a prophet in the town with some relatives who accused her of being a witch and she did not take it lightly.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident and said investigations into the cause of the attack were still in progress.

“We are dealing with a matter in which a Kadoma woman cut the throat of her 10 month-old baby girl and we are still investigating the reasons behind this,” he said.

The incident occurred last Thursday in Kadoma’s Westview suburb when Maxwell Dick arrived home from work only to find his daughter and wife lying in a pool of blood in their bedroom.

Upon further investigations he discovered that his wife had killed their baby by cutting its throat with a knife. She later tried to commit suicide by also cutting her throat but the husband arrived on time to save her.

The matter was reported to the police and she was taken to Kadoma General Hospital where she was transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals owing to the seriousness of her condition.

Muchanyu has since been discharged and is in police custody where she is assisting with investigations.  She is expected to appear in court soon.

Muchanyu went with police for indications at the crime scene yesterday as part of investigations. The baby’s body was taken to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
