MABVUKU’S elderly women received kitchen utensils during Mother’s Day celebrations at Old Tafara Stadium on Sunday.
The donation was organised by Gracious Sakupwanya, the wife of businessman Scott, and was funded by the Scott Foundation.
It attracted thousands of women.
Gracious engaged some models in coming up with the elderly women who showcased their modelling cat walks best.
They won won gas stoves, electrical kettles, jugs, irons and pots. Other elderly women, who did not participate in the impromptu modelling show, were still rewarded and went away with various cooking materials.
Among the winners, who went away with gas stoves, were Agnes Chamboko,73, of Tafara, Christine Biston, 53, of Mabvuku, Regina Chapasuka, 75, of Old Tafara and Nyaradzo Muchayembera, 39, of Old Mabvuku.
Gracious promised the Mabvuku mothers more support through self-help projects, funded by the Scott Foundation, which will be disbursed in partnership with a local bank.
“We are here to thank our mothers and salute their daily roles in our lives,” said Gracious.
“We want every woman to work and be able to afford all the basics and other stuff.”
Scott, who is a Councillor for the area, graced the event.
The Mabvuku folks saluted him for helping in the resurfacing of the main road stretching from Mutare Road to Tafara.
“With this tarred road, transport blues will be a thing of the past and we are not stopping to empower everyone in Mabvuku and Tafara,” he said. Scott said as a son from the neighbourhood, who faced the same challenges which many face today, when he was a kid, he understood their plight better.
He said he was inspired by the challenge to be remembered as one ofthose who changed the face of his community.
