UNITED Kingdom-based author, Catheline Mahuto, reckons the girl child has been marginalised for a long time.
Mahuto has unveiled a motivational book titled The Super Power of the Girl Child.
“In the book, I am expressing how I feel about Girl Child.
“The Girl Child has been marginalised for so long, particularly in the African setting of raising children.
“We have witnessed unfairness in the distribution of resources, lack of support and guidance in building the lives of young women.
“Instead, we have seen teens being forced into arranged marriages with much older men.
“We have seen the widespread abuse of young women and eventually hopeless destitution of families as a result of divorces.
“What we have not seen enough of is families being educated to think beyond cultural lines and break old beliefs in order to learn to appreciate the power of raising a child with a mindset of building strong future generations,” she said.
She told H-Metro that the book seeks to raise awareness on the plight of the girl child and offers readers some insights on how to recognise as well as overcome gender-bias based obstacles.
“I got inspired by my life as a girl child, the challenges I went through and how I came through in life to be able to write my story.
“I felt compelled to provide an awareness to the girl child of today and the future girl child that she must not lose hope.
“I hope to write more books and inspire my generation, and beyond, to write their stories.
“We all have stories to tell and we can always write about them and share our experiences.”
Asked about the challenges she faced as an author, she said:
“We face several challenges, one needs to find a printing and publishing house.
“You need to find the market for the book and it might take a long time because books are written everyday as well as being published.
“This is my first book and I am still learning, but I believe in my second book, it will be much better.”
