THE Government has clarified that motorbikes, tricycles, and trailers are exempt from paying Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) radio licence fees, ending confusion among motorists regarding the requirements for vehicle registration.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Omphile Marupi, told Parliament on Wednesday that the exemption is applied automatically within the licensing system.

This clarification follows inquiries into the legal and policy justifications for compelling motorbike owners to pay for radio licences, even when their vehicles are not equipped with radio receivers.

“As a Ministry, the position is for the motorbikes at moving machinery, tricycles and trailers, they are all exempt from paying radio licence,” he said.

“According to the radio licence, a fee is charged for motorbikes as they are treated as exempt vehicles within the system. The exemption is automatically applied during the licensing process and does not attract any payment or special application by the motorbike owner.

“This position has been in effect since the inception of the mandatory vehicle radio licencing framework implemented in July 2025. As such, motorbike owners are not required to pay ZBC radio licence fee as a condition for licencing their motorbikes.”
