A Bulawayo man leant the hard way that traffic lights were not meant to decorate streets but to regulate traffic flow after he was dragged to court for driving through a red robot.Gouma Daniel Lee, 23, of Chaplin Road in Kumalo allegedly went through a red robot at the intersection of Matopos Road and 23rd Avenue recently and rammed onto another vehicle.
Lee pleaded guilty to the charge before magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa yesterday and was remanded out of custody on his own cognisance to Thursday next week.
Prosecuting, Carrington Dhliwayo narrated how on November 25, last year Lee failed to stop at a robot controlled intersection, as he went through a red robot against traffic rules.
He told the court that at about 11.45am, Lee, who was driving a Ford Bantum along 23rd Avenue, went through the traffic lights resulting in his car colliding with a Toyota Granvia driven by Nokuthula Sibanda.
Lee lost control of the car, which then veered off the road and landed in a trench. Both cars were seriously damaged. A report was made to the police leading to Lee’s arrest.
