MOTORISTS SCAM ALERT! Fraudsters use police plate posts to dupe drivers

B-Metro Reporter

A SINISTER scam is making rounds on social media, with fraudsters exploiting the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP) public listing of vehicle registration numbers to fleece unsuspecting motorists.

This comes after the police recently published registration plates of vehicles caught on camera violating traffic laws across the country. Now, criminals are capitalising on the information to send fake traffic fine messages, tricking drivers into paying non-existent penalties online.

In a strongly worded press statement released on 14 June, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned the public:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a fake message circulating on social media platforms advising motorists or drivers to pay traffic violation fines online. This message is a scam and should be disregarded.”

One of the fake messages reads:
“Reminder: Unpaid traffic ticket TKT-174920433665 for ACR2025 issued on 20250606 under Road Traffic Act. Fine: 10.00 USD. Due by 20250620. Settle now to avoid late fees and penalties.”
Comm Nyathi dismissed this as pure fraud.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to advise the public that this message is fake and not authoried or issued by the police. Fines for traffic violations are currently being paid in person at prescribed police stations,” said Comm Nyathi.

He urged motorists to ignore the fake notices and not send money through any online platform until the ZRP makes an official announcement.
“We urge members of the public not to fall victim to this scam and to be cautious of such fraudulent activities,” he added.

Police say investigations are underway to track down the scammers behind the fake notices, warning that anyone found responsible will face the full wrath of the law.

As the crackdown continues, motorists are advised to verify all fine-related information with their nearest police stations and not trust random texts.
