Motsepe wants to build an African nation that can win the World Cup

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has promised to build an African continent that will produce a Fifa World Cup winner.

An African country is yet to lift the biggest football prize and Motsepe, who assumed office early this year, has expressed his desire to build a country to win the trophy.

Speaking at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nation draw, Motsepe said: “One of our dreams is we want to build an African nation and the African nation winning the Fifa World Cup. There are many countries in Africa, we are in one of those proud nations, and there many other nations on the continent, and we want to encourage them. We have confidence in them that they will compete well and in the not-too-distant future an African nation will indeed win the Fifa World Cup.”

The draw, which took place at Palas de Congres Hotel in Yaoundé on Tuesday night, saw 24 participating teams divided into six groups of four.

The tournament is scheduled for January 9 to February 6, 2022.

Meanwhile, Motsepe also called on the private sector to invest in the African game.

The astute businessman has consistently pushed for the African game to receive the necessary financial input for the development of the game.

He has been known for clamouring for support from corporate bodies across the continent to help develop the game.

Addressing the media at the Total Energies Afcon draw, Motsepe encouraged corporate bodies across the continent to get involved in the game and he believes their involvement will yield great results for them as well as the game.

“We also encourage the private sector. We do business in many countries in Africa, and I can encourage business in all of the 54 countries,” Motsepe said.

“It makes good business sense to sponsor and partner with football in each and every country in Africa. So, I am encouraging the private sector, continue to do well. We want you to make money, but we also want you to partner with our people. We want you to invest in football because when you invest in football, you are part of the challenges, the dreams and you’re also contributing to the growth of the economy in Africa,” he said. – GhanaWeb
