THE Logan Cup second round winds up on Sunday, with Mutare’s cricket franchise Mountaineers in a must-win clash against Bulawayo giants Matabeleland Tuskers at Mutare Sports Club.
The Mountain Goats lost to MidWest Rhinos by nine-wickets at their favourite hunting ground in the four-day match that ended on Wednesday.
The win by the Kwekwe franchise put them at 20 points and catapulted them to the top of the log after winning two consecutive matches in the second round.
Former log leaders Tuskers following their second consecutive blow after a nine-wicket defeat to Mashonaland Eagles on Wednesday now sit on position two with 17 points, Mountaineers on third position with 16 points and Eagles at the bottom with 15 points.
This will mean that the Mountain Goats face a defining moment against Tuskers to keep their hopes of defending their title alive.
They will have to win this match to create more chances in third and final round in the event of losing a match.
While hope is not entirely lost for the Mountain Goats, the dramatic upshot to the top of the log by Rhinos shows that anything can happen in the Logan Cup final round.
Rhinos had been struggling in the first round but have from out of the doldrums been shooting all the way up to the top and threatening to contend in the title run.
Mountaineers fan club chairperson Aubrey Kamba said the team just had a bad day in the office and would recuperate.
“The Mountain Goats struggled from day one in their fielding and I am sure it is just one of those days which they will shrug off. We are entering the decisive round in both the Pro50 championship and Logan Cup so there will be no room for sluggish behaviour.
“But I still put my money on the Mountain Goats to win again,” said Kamba.
