adminMAPUTO – The Namibian government is to purchase power from Mozambique in the next few days, the Mozambican Electricity Company (EDM) said yesterday. It said the electricity is produced by the multinational Aggreko at the border post of Ressano Garcia, in the southern province of Maputo, and that Namibia will acquire power through the multinational Aggreko, which owns the project.
An agreement for the deal was signed between NamPower, EDM and Aggreko in March.
In a statement, Aggreko says NamPower will be purchasing 70 percent of the electricity the company produces there. Power from Ressano Garcia is produced by natural gas pumped from the Temane and Pande gas field, in the southern province of Inhambane.
The Ressano Garcia power station was built last year as part of a project to fill the gap on energy demand in the southern Africa region.
Only in recent years, Mozambique discovered huge deposit of off-shore natural gas as well as coal, drawing attention from the energy-hungry neighbors.
Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo have also expressed their wish to purchase power, according to the EDM. Zimbabwe and Malawi, on the other hand, have already been buying electricity from Mozambique. – Xinhua.
