Following the qualification of the Zimbabwe Girls Under-21 national team for this year’s FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup that will be held in Chile, Goromonzi West Member of Parliament, Cde Biatah Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga has called on Parliament to come up with a budget for the squad.
Speaking in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga said a budget to support the Zimbabwe U-21 Girls national team will enhance their performance at the Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup.
Zimbabwe qualified for the fourth consecutive time.
“The nation notes with profound admiration and national pride the extraordinary achievement of the Zimbabwe Girls Under-21 National Hockey team in securing qualification for the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup for the fourth consecutive time, that is 2016, 2022, 2023, and 2025.
“These girls scrounge around to get sponsorship, but they are not sponsored through the Government budget or organisations that oversee sports.
“So after noticing that these girls are working very hard, I am urging this House, through the Committee and Minister of Sports, to get a budget for these girls so that when they go to the World Cup, they will be well-funded and can represent Zimbabwe well,” said Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga.
“I urge this House to salute these exceptional young girls, ambassadors of Zimbabwe, and reaffirm its commitment to supporting sporting excellence as it is a vital pillar of national development and pride.
“The nation recognises that this team serves as powerful role models for girls and young women across Zimbabwe, proving that ambition, discipline, and teamwork can lead to world-class achievement. We are actively promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through sports, thus challenging stereotypes and inspiring participation,” she said.
