Chikomba East legislator, Cde Felix Mhona recently sponsored a marathon in his constituency as a way of fighting drug and substance abuse, particularly amongst the youths.

Participants were drawn from various villages and were grouped in three categories.
Anyone above the age of 18 was eligible to participate.

The first group competed in a 5-kilometre race, the second one in a 10-kilometre race while the third group competed in the 21-kilometre race.
The competitions started as early as 8 am and every participant completed the run.

Besides the competitions, medical experts were at hand to offer services for free.
In an interview with The Herald on the sidelines of the event, Cde Mhona who is also the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development emphasised the importance of eradicating drug and substance abuse for a better Zimbabwe.

“First and foremost, let me say we have a hard-working and dedicated leader, President Mnangagwa, who has a clear vision of a prosperous Zimbabwe where drug and substance abuse is not tolerated,” he said.
“President Mnangagwa is on record saying nyika inovakwa nevena vayo, and there is a lot of counsel in his wise words. If we do not unite as Zimbabweans and put our heads together, we will not move ahead in terms of development.”

Cde Mhona expressed gratitude for the huge turnout and said it had allowed him to engage people in his constituency on the issue of drugs.
“I realised that we have talent in this constituency. We will work hard to ensure that talent is put to good and productive use,” he said.

Cde Mhona also distributed food hampers to everyone who attended.
