MPILO Central Hospital in Bulawayo has called on Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to return home and invest in the country’s medical institutions, saying those based outside the country have immense capacity and exposure to skills and resources needed to help improve service provisions.

Speaking on the sidelines of a donation recently made to the hospital’s Ward B6 by a United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean, Mr Dumisani Moyo, the chief executive officer, Mr Leonard Mabandi, said the diasporans have great potential to improve the country’s medical institutions.

“A lot can be done by our colleagues in the diaspora towards the development of the hospital. Our health workers have also gained a lot of experience, so I’m not seeing anything that can stop them from sharing their ideas. They have good exposure which can help us improve our health sector.

“We have a number of organisations from outside the country that come and donate, so our colleagues with better access to equipment and funding could still do the same and donate also.”

Mr Mabandi also applauded the Government for supporting the institution.

“We are coping because the Government has been supporting us. Some of the equipment we are using was sourced by the Government,” he said.

Mr Moyo said the donation sought to encourage other locals based in the diaspora to give back to the community.

“It’s an honour to extend a helping hand. I started donating in 2009 after discovering that my father was HIV positive. I, therefore, saw it best to continue helping people who need medical assistance,” he said.

Mr Moyo said he had adopted the ward and was in the process of renovating it.

“What is mostly important is that this donation is a starting point for improving B6. I have mobilised other diasporans to help in renovating the ward. The renovations will commence in July,” he said.
