FORMER Zimbabwe Under-15 captain and Highlanders utility player Akim Mpofu has made an impact at Cushing Soccer Academy in the United States which earned him a scholarship to the North Eastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mpofu has been an instant hit as he was named NEPSAC MVP following the 2013 season where he had 13 goals and seven assists.
He was also drafted into both the New England Schools Junior All Star, team Boston Globe All-Scholastic boys’ soccer, the overall All Star Team and named in the American top 25 best players.
Mpofu who is in the country on holiday, said his aim was to achieve big in the US to enable him to play top flight football.
“It’s been a great two years for me in the US. I got what I wanted which was playing while at school. I want to take advantage of my achievements to get contracts at top clubs like New York Red Bulls or Philadelphia Union,” said Mpofu.
Mpofu led the Zimbabwe Under-15 side in 2010 Youth Olympics held in Singapore and the youngster said he wants to make Warriors or Under-23 debut.
“I hope to catch the coaches’ attention soon and it will be a dream come true to play for the national team,” he said.
Mpofu said he was grateful to all who had been instrumental in his success.
“I am grateful to my family, teammates and coaches for the huge role they played to support me,” he said.
