ZIMBABWE’S top long-distance runner Isaac Mpofu, will test his fitness this Sunday at the 18th edition of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, as he works his way back to peak form following a recent injury setback.
Mpofu, who has been recovering from a hip injury that disrupted the early part of his 2025 season, made a promising return to racing last week, finishing fifth at the Tanganda Half Marathon in a solid time of 01 hour 05 minutes.
He will run the full marathon in Victoria Falls.
“This race is very important for me. I want to see how well I have recovered and whether I am on track for Tokyo in September,” said Mpofu, referring to the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan.
The seasoned marathoner says Sunday’s race will serve as both a competitive test and a health check, as he builds towards major international commitments.
“This race is about my body, my rhythm and getting back into race shape,” said Mpofu.
Mpofu was previously forced to skip some local events due to the hip issue, which kept him out of full training for several weeks.
His return at the Tanganda Half Marathon last weekend has boosted confidence and now all eyes will be on his performance this weekend.
The 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon will feature a full 42,195km marathon, a 21,0975km half marathon, a 21km relay and a 7km fun run. Under the theme “Road2Victory Asambeni MaLegends,” the event continues to attract elite and amateur runners from across the world.
In 2024, the race drew over 5 000 participants from 31 countries. For Mpofu, the goal is simple: test his limits and continue his comeback with Tokyo firmly in his sights.
Mpofu will be joined in Tokyo by another long distance runner, Tendai Zimuto.
The two distance runners qualified through World Rankings for the World Championships.
For Zimuto, it will be his first appearance at the World Championships.
Mpofu has been to the global meet before and represented the country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as well .
They join Tapiwanashe Makarawu, Makanakaishe Charamba and Vimbayi Maisvorewa, who have also qualified for the championships.
