AS the World Athletics Championships draw closer, marathon runners Isaac Mpofu and Tendai Zimuto are now set to focus on the specifics for the event.

The two are in camp in Harare working under the guidance of seasoned coach Benson Chauke ahead of the meet scheduled for September 13 to 21 in Tokyo, Japan.

In the last few months, they have competed in different races as part of the assessment.

Zimuto was part of the field in the men’s 10,000m at the Southern Region Senior Athletics Championships held over the weekend at the University of Zimbabwe.

It is likely to be his last race ahead of Tokyo as Chauke said they are now shifting focus to specifics for the main race in Japan.

“Now that this has been said and done, we are now going at specific sessions, specific in everything that we do,” said Chauke.

“If it is speed, it has to be speed that speaks to the targeted speed that we are likely going to be facing.

“So, we are going to be putting more of that, more of speed endurance, more of speed, maintaining strength training and balancing things together now because what we are doing is now more serious.

“It’s no longer slower like it was before.

“It’s now going to be closer to what we are likely going to be experiencing in terms of the technical preparation, and in terms of training with the particular weather we are expecting in Japan.

“We understand the weather might be slightly different, it’s still cooler now, and it’s going to be windy for us, but we have to make do with that for now. And we will see how it unfolds as we draw nearer to the competition date.”

Zimuto is set to make his debut at the World Championships in Tokyo. Mpofu has been there before.
