MARONDERA will host this year’s edition of the two-day Nash Under-20 boys’ and girls’ volleyball championships starting tomorrow pitting the country’s 10 provincial winners. Mpopoma High School will represent Bulawayo province in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, and they are set to leave for Marondera today.

The Bulawayo representatives would be seeking to wrest the boys’ title from defending champions Cornway College of Mashonaland West and the girls’ crown from Chivi High of Masvingo, who have both won the national titles for the past two years and would be fighting to make it a hat-trick this weekend.

Mpopoma High won the ticket to represent Bulawayo in the provincial games two weeks ago by beating Luveve High 2-0 in the boys’ section while the girls’ side beat Eveline High by the same margin.

The school has been virtually dominant of Bulawayo secondary schools’ volleyball as they have been qualifying for annual tournament since 2010, with the exception of 2014 when the girls’ and boys’ sides lost to Eveline High and Induna High respectively in the final.

In 2013, the Mpopoma High boys’ team was third in the national finals and would be hoping to do better this year. The girls have found the going tough as they have failed to go beyond the group stages in the national finals.

“The girls have to work hard to advance past the group stages but the boys had a good run in 2013 and this year we don’t expect anything less,” said Mpopoma sports director James Rugwevera.
