MPOPOMA High School on Friday re-affirmed its position as one of the top women’s soccer schools after beating Somvubu 3-1 in the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) Under-17 tournament which ended at Barbourfields Stadium on Friday.
The event attracted schools from the country’s 10 provinces and ran alongside other ball sports.
Mpopoma won gold after finishing first following a 2-0 win over Matabeleland North powerhouse Somvubu in the final.
NASH president Cephus Mutumhe described the ball games as having a lot of talent to be identified and nurtured.
Mpopoma beat Nkankezi of Matabeleland South 1-0, lost 0-1 to Waverley in the group stages. Waverley and Nkankezi drew 1-1.
Mpopoma and Warveley proceeded to the quarter-finals.
In the round of eight teams Mpopoma beat Rufaro High School 1-0 to book a semi-final date with Nyamahuru who they beat 2-0.
Somvubu were dominant in their group beating Glen Norah High School of Harare 3-0 and losing to Nyamahuru and at the quarter-final stage the Bubi District-located Somvubu beat Mzilikazi
High School 1-0 in the quarter-finals and drubbed Goromonzi 3-0 in the semis before going down 3-1 to Mpopoma.
Mpopoma High School director of sport was impressed by the performance of the players. He said all were Under-16 which bodes well for the future.
“The girls played very well, especially the fact that they were all below 16 years playing in the Under-20 team,” he said.
Mpopoma’s Rejoice Mweetwa was adjudged to have been the best goalkeeper of the tournament, with Chiedza Khumalo best striker and the player of the tournament award went to Praise Neshiri.
The supportive Mpopoma headmistress, Sihle Sibanda was happy with the girls’ performance.
“The hard work, discipline and determination has earned them this achievement.”
“The Mpopoma community is really proud of the team and congratulations to the individuals that received awards,” she said.
