PARLIAMENTARIANS have visited the Deka River to assess the disturbing levels of acid mine drainage threatening humans, wildlife and the environment.

Following presentations by mining companies and relevant stakeholders, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife proceeded with an on-site verification visit to various points along the Deka River in Hwange District.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) took the Committee through the identified sources and extent of pollution affecting the river, providing members with an opportunity to assess the situation on the ground.

During the visit, the Committee observed first-hand significant volumes of acid mine drainage entering the environment and examined the interventions being implemented to mitigate pollution of the Deka River.

The verification exercise is expected to provide the Committee with evidence to inform Parliament’s recommendations on environmental protection, pollution control and sustainable mining practices, while safeguarding the wellbeing of communities dependent on the Deka River.
