Government should prioritise the procurement of a modern air traffic management system and upgrade tower control equipment at all eight airports in the country.
The Parliament Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development said this in a report on the state of airports infrastructure presented in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
The committee said given the high volume of air movement, lack of proper surveillance technology posed a security threat as smuggling syndicates could utilise this opening to fly out highly-valued minerals such as gold and diamonds as well as ivory out of the country.
“The prolonged delay in the procurement of the radar and aviation communication system due to the public procurement procedure and legal cases is exposing the country to aircraft collision, failure to promptly identify distressed aircraft, delays and increased operating costs of airlines,” reads part of the report.
